New Gas Turbines

New GT Reliability Run Scope

Your new gas turbine has passed its first fire and synchronised to the grid. Before you accept it, it should prove it can run steadily for days at the loads you need. That is the job of the reliability run, and the way you scope it decides how much protection it gives you.

If the run is too short, too gentle or loosely defined, faults that would have shown up in a week appear after handover instead. Then the turbine trips in commercial operation, warranty arguments start and your customers face the outage. A weak reliability run moves risk from the builder to you.

USP&E Helps You Scope a Reliability Run That Protects You

We understand that handover is where risk changes hands. USP&E has delivered 150+ power projects in 45+ countries, with 25,000 MW contracted since 2002, and our 400+ engineers and project managers build, commission and maintain gas turbine plant with clear acceptance tests. Our systems are ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 certified, and every deal runs under FCPA and OFAC controls. USP&E is a full-service EPC and O&M contractor, not a broker.

You do not need an endless test. You need a defined duration, a realistic load profile, clear rules on interruptions and acceptance limits written into the contract before anyone fires the unit.

Define Duration, Load and Interruption Rules

Agree how long the run lasts and what load profile it follows. A run at steady base load proves endurance; adding load changes, starts and stops proves the unit will handle your real operating pattern. Match the profile to how the plant will actually run.

Write down what counts as an interruption. Trips caused by the turbine usually restart the clock or extend the run; outages caused by the grid or your own systems usually do not. Clear rules prevent arguments when something happens on day four.

Set the run within the wider commissioning plan, after functional tests and before performance tests. Our guide to natural gas turbine power plants shows where each stage fits.

Set Acceptance Limits and Record Everything

Set acceptance limits for vibration, temperatures, emissions, output and alarms. Base them on supplier guarantees, your permit and the contract. A unit that completes the run but shows rising vibration or repeated alarms should not pass without a clear explanation.

Record operating data throughout the run and keep it with the handover file. This data is the baseline for future O&M and the evidence if a warranty question arises later. Include operator logs, alarm lists and any adjustments made during the run.

Close the punch list before or during the run where you can, and agree which items may stay open after handover with dates and owners. Link the run results to your long-term service agreement so the service provider starts with the full picture.

Hand Over With Clear Records

Hand over only when the run is complete, acceptance limits are met and records are in order. The handover file should include run data, test reports, punch list status, spares, manuals and training records.

Budget for the run properly. Fuel, operators, test equipment and grid arrangements all cost money, and they should sit in the project plan from day one. Our breakdown of gas turbine EPC costs shows where commissioning fits in the total.

Every kind of gas turbine generators deserves this discipline: a remanufactured GE Frame 6B, used/new gas turbines, natural gas engines/stations and New USP&E FX-45 45MW Modular Gas Turbine for the Hyperscale Data Center sector in the USA. In hyperscale EPC/O&M, AI gas turbines, hyperscale generators and gas turbines for compute must prove reliability before they carry live load. For campus generation, see our sister site on data centre generators.

Local Teams Near Your GT Commissioning Site

Data-centre schedules are won or lost in permitting, gas supply and interconnection, so USP&E puts its US offices first. Colorado Springs (1755 Telstar Dr, Suite 300) and Knoxville (800 S Gay St, Suite 700) give you two US bases for engineering reviews, procurement follow-up and site visits, and both teams work your new GT commissioning programme alongside you rather than from a sales desk.

Behind them, London (162-168 Regent Street) handles structuring, bonding and finance; Johannesburg (22 Kildoon Rd, Bryanston) owns engineering and project controls for new gas turbines, commissioning spares and bridge units; Cape Town (31 Brickfield Road, Woodstock) supports design and commissioning; and Wuxi, China (No. 1, Ningzhou Road, Wuxi) manages China manufacturing and supply-chain follow-up.

For reliability runs, Colorado Springs and Knoxville engineers can help you write duration, load and acceptance rules into the contract, then witness the run and review the handover records. Regions served: USA | AFRICA | UK | UAE | CHINA. That network stands behind 150+ power projects in 45+ countries and 25,000 MW contracted since 2002, run under ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 certified systems.

What USP&E Has Delivered for GT Commissioning Buyers

You want proof that USP&E has commissioned and handed over gas turbine and thermal plant. These projects show that record.

  • USP&E has refurbished seven GE Frame 6B gas turbines to zero hours in-house for major US hyperscale data-centre developers.
  • NEOM, Saudi Arabia: USP&E supplied three zero-hour Siemens SGT-400 gas turbines as the single technical and commercial interface, and the client reported savings of over $10 million. Read the case study.
  • London Mining, Marampa, Sierra Leone: USP&E engineered, supplied and commissioned a 16 MW HFO power station in five months, two months ahead of schedule and on budget. Read the case study.

HowTo: Plan the Reliability Run on a New GT

Your 3-step plan: 1. Share your contract terms, commissioning plan and load needs. 2. Receive a reliability run scope with acceptance limits. 3. Witness the run, close the punch list and hand over under accountable O&M.

  1. Agree the entry conditions: commissioning complete, protection tested and punch items cleared.
  2. Write the run duration, load profile and allowed stops into the contract.
  3. Define which trips or faults reset the run and which do not.
  4. Staff the run with operators, maintainers and vendor support.
  5. Log every event, alarm and stop with the cause and the fix.
  6. Close the run with a signed report that feeds warranty and takeover.

FAQ: New GT Reliability Run Scope

What is a gas turbine reliability run?

USP&E defines a reliability run as a continuous period of operation, after commissioning tests, in which the new turbine must run at agreed loads without turbine-caused trips. It proves the unit is ready for commercial operation before risk passes from the builder to you.

How long should a reliability run last?

USP&E sets duration from the contract, the plant’s role and the supplier’s terms. Many runs last several days, but the right length depends on how the plant will operate. What matters most is that the duration, load profile and interruption rules are written down in advance.

What happens if the turbine trips during the run?

USP&E follows the interruption rules in the contract. A trip caused by the turbine usually restarts or extends the run once the cause is fixed, while grid or site-caused outages usually do not. Clear rules avoid disputes when an event happens during testing.

What acceptance limits should a reliability run use?

USP&E sets limits for vibration, temperatures, emissions, output and alarms based on supplier guarantees, permits and the contract. A unit that finishes the run with rising trends or repeated alarms should be explained and fixed before handover is formally accepted.

Where are USP&E’s offices for new turbine projects?

USP&E supports new gas turbine projects from Colorado Springs and Knoxville in the US. London structures contracts and finance, Johannesburg and Cape Town add engineering and field depth across Africa, and Wuxi follows up switchgear and equipment made in China.

Has USP&E delivered and commissioned power plants before?

USP&E has refurbished seven GE Frame 6B gas turbines to zero hours in-house for major US hyperscale data-centre developers. Public case studies also include zero-hour SGT-400 units supplied to NEOM and a 16 MW HFO station for London Mining at Marampa, Sierra Leone.

Is USP&E a broker for new gas turbines?

USP&E is not a broker. USP&E builds, commissions and maintains gas turbine plant with its own engineers, so the team that scopes your reliability run is the same team that witnesses it, closes the punch list and answers for the plant afterwards.

How fast can USP&E respond to a reliability run review?

USP&E can start reviewing your contract terms, commissioning plan and load needs as soon as you share them. Engineers flag weak or missing acceptance rules early, so they can be agreed before first fire rather than argued over during the run.

Accept Your Turbine Only When It Has Proved Itself

Scope the reliability run well and your turbine enters service with proven endurance and clean records. Skip the detail and faults surface after handover, at your cost. USP&E will help you scope, witness and accept with confidence.
