New GT Inlet Air Filtration

Your new gas turbine breathes enormous volumes of air, and everything in that air either stops at the filter house or reaches the compressor. Dust, sand, salt and insects vary by site and season, and the filter design has to match what your site really throws at it.

If inlet filtration is left as a late intake detail, the risk is fast compressor fouling, high differential pressure that cuts output and filter changes far more often than planned. Your new unit loses performance in its first dusty season, and the rework delays your project.

USP&E as Your Guide for Turbine Inlet Design

We understand how disappointing it is to watch a new machine lose output in its first season. Since 2002 USP&E has built 150+ power stations, supplied about 25 000 MW and guided projects in 85+ countries, with 35+ completed utility-scale projects and 18 live projects in 11 countries. Our 400+ engineers and project managers are ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 certified and work under FCPA and OFAC controls. USP&E is a full-service EPC and O&M contractor, not a broker.

Start With Your Site’s Dust Profile

Collect what you can about your air: dust concentration and particle size, seasonal storms, coastal salt, humidity, fog, insects and nearby sources such as roads, quarries or farms. That profile decides filter stages, whether you need pulse-cleaning cartridges or static filters, and whether coalescers or moisture separators are needed for salt and fog.

Ask each bidder to state the filter arrangement, stage ratings, design face velocity and expected differential pressure at clean and dirty conditions. Compare offers against your dust profile, not just against each other, and check that the stage ratings quoted match the unit that will actually ship.

Design Pulse Cleaning, Hoods and Changeouts

Pulse-cleaning systems need dry compressed air, a cleaning sequence and controls that respond to differential pressure. Weather hoods and drainage stop rain and snow from soaking filters. Plan access platforms and lifting so your technicians can change filters safely and quickly, and store spare filters where dust and moisture cannot reach them.

Set differential-pressure alarms and trips, and record a clean baseline during commissioning. Natural gas engines/stations on the same site need sensible inlet filtration too, though their air volumes are smaller. A changeout plan tied to differential pressure and season keeps your gas turbine generators performing year-round.

Bridge Units and Larger Blocks Need the Same Discipline

A remanufactured GE Frame 6B may be evaluated when you need firm megawatts while a new filter house is designed. Check its inlet system data, filter condition and wash history with the records and inspection scope, and compare used/new gas turbines on how their filtration suits your site.

Programmes that include AI gas turbines, hyperscale generators and gas turbines for compute must reserve space for larger filter houses and spare filter storage. The planning reference is modular FX-45 OCGT 45MW / CCGT 108MW 2×1, for 50 Hz and 60 Hz, with capacity slots from 2028. One contractor carrying hyperscale EPC/O&M keeps the filtration standard consistent.

Local Teams Near Your GT Commissioning Site

Data-centre schedules are won or lost in permitting, gas supply and interconnection, so USP&E puts its US offices first. Colorado Springs (1755 Telstar Dr, Suite 300) and Knoxville (800 S Gay St, Suite 700) give you two US bases for engineering reviews, procurement follow-up and site visits, and both teams work your new GT commissioning programme alongside you rather than from a sales desk.

Behind them, London (162-168 Regent Street) handles structuring, bonding and finance; Johannesburg (22 Kildoon Rd, Bryanston) owns engineering and project controls for new gas turbines, commissioning spares and bridge units; Cape Town (31 Brickfield Road, Woodstock) supports design and commissioning; and Wuxi, China (No. 1, Ningzhou Road, Wuxi) manages China manufacturing and supply-chain follow-up.

For a new turbine buyer, that means the team that turns your dust data into a filter specification can also witness the clean differential-pressure baseline at commissioning and review the first season’s trend with you. Regions served: USA | AFRICA | UK | UAE | CHINA. That network has guided projects in 85+ countries, delivered 35+ completed utility-scale projects and runs 18 live projects in 11 countries under ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 certified systems.

Proof from Recent GT Commissioning Projects

You need proof that USP&E delivers turbines that perform on real sites. These projects show refurbishment, zero-hour turbine supply and fast modular EPC.

  • USP&E has refurbished seven GE Frame 6B gas turbines to zero hours in-house for major US hyperscale data-centre developers.
  • Perenco, Guatemala: USP&E delivered a 13.1 MW HFO/diesel modular power station under full EPC in under five months, on time and on budget. Read the case study.
  • NEOM, Saudi Arabia: USP&E supplied three zero-hour Siemens SGT-400 gas turbines as the single technical and commercial interface, and the client reported savings of over $10 million. Read the case study.

HowTo: Build the equipment and delivery path

Your 3-step plan: 1. Share your site dust data, climate records and turbine bids. 2. Get an inlet filtration specification and package review with EPC and O&M. 3. Commission, record the clean baseline and run a changeout plan.

  1. List dust profile, filter stages, pulse-clean interfaces, and which inlet loops must be proven before energisation is released.
  2. Compare remanufactured GE Frame 6B, verified used/new gas turbines, and natural gas engines/stations against filtration assumptions.
  3. Review candidates at the central inventory hub and request records, inspection findings, controls status, inlet data, and logistics dimensions.
  4. Reserve filter-house and cable interfaces for modular FX-45 OCGT 45MW / CCGT 108MW 2×1, 50/60 Hz, with capacity slots from 2028.
  5. Integrate stage ratings, changeout plans, differential baselines, and O&M change-control into one filtration matrix.
  6. Complete permits, funding, insurance agreements, and commissioning rehearsals before final equipment selection.

FAQ: New GT Inlet Air Filtration

Why finish inlet air filtration design before energising new gas turbines?

USP&E finishes filtration design first because the filter house decides how much dust, salt and moisture reaches the compressor. A poor match fouls the compressor quickly, raises differential pressure and cuts output in the first dusty season, forcing rework after the unit is installed.

What site data does an inlet filtration design need?

USP&E asks for dust concentration and particle size, seasonal storms, coastal salt, humidity, fog, insects and nearby dust sources. That profile decides filter stages, pulse-cleaning or static filters and whether moisture separators are needed, so the design suits your actual air rather than a generic site.

Can a remanufactured GE Frame 6B meet modern filtration needs?

USP&E can upgrade the inlet system on a remanufactured GE Frame 6B where needed. Its existing filter house, wash history and records are reviewed with the inspection scope, and new stages or weather hoods are added if your dust profile demands better protection.

Where are USP&E offices that support new turbine projects in the US?

USP&E puts its US offices first, with Colorado Springs and Knoxville giving you two bases for engineering reviews, procurement follow-up and site visits. London handles structuring and finance, Johannesburg owns engineering and project controls, Cape Town supports commissioning, and Wuxi manages China manufacturing.

Has USP&E delivered new and zero-hour turbines before?

USP&E has refurbished seven GE Frame 6B gas turbines to zero hours in-house for major US hyperscale data-centre developers. Public case studies include three zero-hour Siemens SGT-400 turbines supplied to NEOM and a 13.1 MW modular station for Perenco in Guatemala.

Is USP&E a broker for new gas turbines?

USP&E is not a broker. USP&E is a full-service EPC and O&M contractor that specifies, supplies, installs, commissions and operates power plants, so the team that designs your inlet filtration is accountable for how the turbine performs through every dusty season.

How fast can USP&E respond to a filtration review?

USP&E can start as soon as you share your site dust data, climate records and turbine bids. A first filtration recommendation follows quickly, and the full timeline then depends on data quality and whether the filter house needs custom design work.

What belongs in a filtration evidence pack?

USP&E includes the dust profile, filter arrangement and stage ratings, face velocity, clean and dirty differential pressure, pulse-cleaning design, weather hood details and the changeout plan. Commissioning adds the clean baseline, so later readings show exactly how fast filters load.

Let Your New Turbine Breathe Clean Air

Get inlet filtration right and your new turbine keeps its output through dust storms and humid seasons. Get it wrong and you fight fouling, high differential pressure and frequent changes from year one. USP&E will help you design the filter house correctly.
