New GT Liquid Fuel Backup System Scope | USP&E

New Gas Turbines

New GT Liquid Fuel Backup System Scope

Your new gas turbine is built to run on gas, but gas supply is not guaranteed. Pipelines are interrupted, compressor stations trip and LNG deliveries run late. A liquid fuel backup system lets the unit keep running, but only if it is sized, specified and tested for the day you actually need it.

If the backup scope is an afterthought, the risks are serious: storage too small to ride through a real outage, fuel that has degraded in the tank, a changeover that trips the unit and nozzles that foul on their first run in years. That means downtime, lost output and penalties exactly when the grid or the campus needs you most.

USP&E Helps You Make Backup Fuel Work When Gas Fails

We know you want a backup that works on the day, not just on paper. USP&E has delivered 150+ power projects in 45+ countries, with 25,000 MW contracted since 2002, and our 400+ engineers and project managers specify, build, commission and operate gas turbine plant on gas and liquid fuel. Our systems are ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 certified, and every deal runs under FCPA and OFAC controls. USP&E is a full-service EPC and O&M contractor, not a broker.

You do not need the biggest tank farm on the market. You need a clear run-time target, a fuel quality plan and changeover rules that are tested before handover and practised afterwards.

Set the Run-Time Target and Size the System

Decide how long your unit must run on liquid fuel and why. The answer may come from your power purchase agreement, your campus availability target, permit limits on liquid fuel hours or the longest gas interruption you expect. Write the target down, because every other decision follows from it.

Size storage, forwarding pumps, filtration and any heating from that run time and the unit’s fuel demand at the expected load. Include refill logistics: how quickly trucks can deliver, how many and from where. A tank that cannot be refilled during a long outage only buys time.

Our guide to turbine EPC budgeting shows how backup fuel systems fit into overall plant scope and why they are often underestimated.

Specify Fuel Quality and Keep It Good in Storage

Specify the liquid fuel quality your turbine needs and the tests that prove it on delivery and in storage. Contaminants such as water, sodium, vanadium and particles can damage the hot section, so treat fuel quality as part of the turbine’s protection, not as a commercial detail.

Fuel that sits for months can degrade, grow microbes and collect water. Plan regular sampling, water draining and polishing or turnover so the fuel in the tank is fit to burn when needed. Record every test.

Design the storage area for safety and the environment: bunds, spill control, fire protection and separation from the turbine. Our guide to the gas turbine power plant covers how fuel systems fit into the layout.

Define, Test and Practise Changeover

Define changeover rules from gas to liquid fuel and back, both under load and at start. Some units can change over on load and others need reduced load. Agree the rules with the turbine supplier and write them into operating procedures.

Test changeovers during commissioning and record the results: load, time, any trips and exhaust spreads. Then run the backup system on a schedule in operation, so nozzles, valves and pumps stay healthy. This applies to new gas turbine generators, a remanufactured GE Frame 6B, other used/new gas turbines and natural gas engines/stations with dual-fuel capability.

AI gas turbines, hyperscale generators and gas turbines for compute run under hyperscale EPC/O&M depend on tested backup fuel, as will the New USP&E FX-45 45MW Modular Gas Turbine for the Hyperscale Data Center sector in the USA. HowTo: Define the Liquid Fuel Backup Scope for a New GT

Your 3-step plan: 1. Share your run-time target, fuel supply and turbine data. 2. Receive a liquid fuel backup scope with tests and procedures. 3. Commission, test changeovers and keep the backup ready in O&M.

  1. Decide how long the unit must run on liquid fuel and why.
  2. Size storage, forwarding pumps and filtration from that run time.
  3. Specify the fuel quality and the tests that prove it on delivery and in storage.
  4. Define changeover rules from gas to liquid fuel and back, under load and at start.
  5. Test changeovers during commissioning and record the results.
  6. Run the backup system on a schedule so it works when the gas supply fails.

FAQ: New GT Liquid Fuel Backup System Scope

How much liquid fuel storage does a dual-fuel gas turbine need?

USP&E sizes storage from the run-time target, the unit’s fuel demand at expected load and how quickly the tank can be refilled. The target may come from your contract, your availability goal, permit limits or the longest gas interruption you expect, so it differs for every project.

Why does liquid fuel quality matter for gas turbines?

USP&E treats fuel quality as hot-section protection. Water, sodium, vanadium and particles in liquid fuel can corrode and foul turbine parts. Testing fuel on delivery and in storage, and treating or polishing it when needed, protects the turbine every time it runs on backup.

Can a gas turbine change from gas to liquid fuel under load?

USP&E checks changeover capability with each turbine supplier. Many dual-fuel units can change over under load, while others need reduced load or a restart. The rules should be written into operating procedures and tested during commissioning before the plant relies on them.

How often should the backup fuel system be run?

USP&E runs backup fuel systems on a fixed schedule agreed with the turbine supplier and the operating team. Regular runs keep nozzles, valves and pumps healthy and prove the system works. Fuel that sits unused for years without testing is a backup in name only.

Where are USP&E’s offices for new turbine commissioning?

USP&E leads new turbine commissioning from Colorado Springs and Knoxville in the US. London supports contracts and finance, Johannesburg and Cape Town add engineering and field depth across Africa, and Wuxi follows up pumps, filters and equipment made in China.

Has USP&E delivered liquid-fuel and dual-fuel plants before?

USP&E has refurbished seven GE Frame 6B gas turbines to zero hours in-house for major US hyperscale data-centre developers. Public case studies also include a 16 MW HFO station in Sierra Leone and a 13.1 MW HFO and diesel modular station for Perenco in Guatemala.

Is USP&E a broker for new gas turbines?

USP&E is not a broker. USP&E specifies, supplies, builds and operates gas turbine plant with its own people, so the team that defines your backup fuel scope is the same team that tests the changeovers and keeps the system ready.

How fast can USP&E review a backup fuel scope?

USP&E can start reviewing your run-time target, fuel supply arrangements and turbine data as soon as you share them. Engineers flag undersized storage and missing changeover tests first, so they can be fixed well before the design is frozen and equipment is ordered.

Keep Running When the Gas Stops

Size and test your backup fuel properly and your unit keeps running through a gas outage. Treat it as an afterthought and it fails on the day it matters. USP&E will help you define, commission and maintain the system with confidence.
