New GT Relay Coordination Study
Your new gas turbines are on order, and someone will eventually set the protection relays. If coordination is left as a late commissioning chore, your relays may trip the wrong breaker, too fast or too slow, and nobody finds out until a real fault happens.
That means nuisance trips that take healthy units offline, faults that damage equipment because protection was too slow and a commissioning date that slips while settings are argued over. Every trip during your first months of operation erodes confidence in a plant you just paid for.
USP&E Guides Your Protection From Study to Commissioning
We know protection studies can look like paperwork until something trips. Since 2002 USP&E has built 150+ power stations and supplied about 25 000 MW across 85+ countries, with 35+ completed utility-scale projects and 18 live projects in 11 countries. Our 400+ engineers and project managers carry protection design from first study through commissioning tests. USP&E is a full-service EPC and O&M contractor, not a broker.
Make Relay Coordination a Commercial Gate
Write protection coordination into your contracts as a deliverable with a deadline, not a task for whoever commissions the plant. Require short-circuit, coordination and arc-flash studies before your equipment is finalised, because study results can change breaker ratings, CT ratios and relay types.
Collect accurate data for every element of your system: generator reactances and decrement curves, transformer impedances, cable lengths and the utility’s fault levels and protection settings at the connection point. Your gas turbine generators contribute fault current differently from grid supply, so settings must work with the plant islanded, grid-connected and partially loaded.
Check your utility’s requirements early. Interconnection protection, anti-islanding and reclosing coordination often need utility approval, and late surprises can delay your energisation date.
Protect a Remanufactured GE Frame 6B Bridge Properly
A remanufactured GE Frame 6B used as bridge power needs the same care. Obtain its generator data and the relay settings you inherit, and include it in the coordination study with your new units, so it does not trip unnecessarily or leave faults uncleared. Check inspection records and controls status too.
Natural gas engines/stations added during the transition must also be included. Comparing used/new gas turbines and engines on fault contribution and protection needs helps you design a scheme that works in every configuration.
Keep one master settings file for your whole site. Every relay, its approved settings, the study revision it came from and the date it was last tested should sit in one controlled document, so your commissioning team, your operators and the utility are always working from the same numbers.
Plan Protection for AI Gas Turbines and FX-45 Growth
As AI gas turbines, hyperscale generators and gas turbines for compute expand a site, fault levels rise and coordination must be revisited. Choose relays and breakers with headroom, and keep your protection model updated so each new block is added with a study, not a guess.
The planning reference for later blocks is modular FX-45 OCGT 45MW / CCGT 108MW 2×1, for 50 Hz and 60 Hz, with capacity slots from 2028. USP&E carries studies, settings and commissioning tests into hyperscale EPC/O&M, with secondary injection results, settings files and trip records kept current for your operators.
Global Offices Behind Your GT Commissioning Programme
Your team wants answers in its own time zone. USP&E’s offices in Colorado Springs (1755 Telstar Dr, Suite 300) and Knoxville (800 S Gay St, Suite 700) lead your new GT commissioning programme conversations in the US, from the first data request to the site visit, so questions about fuel, interconnection and delivery are answered by people who can be on site.
The wider network carries the heavy lifting for new gas turbines, commissioning spares and bridge units: London (162-168 Regent Street) for structuring and finance, Johannesburg (22 Kildoon Rd, Bryanston) for engineering and project controls, Cape Town (31 Brickfield Road, Woodstock) for design and commissioning support, and Wuxi, China (No. 1, Ningzhou Road, Wuxi) for China supply chain and manufacturing.
For a new turbine commissioning programme, that means Colorado Springs and Knoxville protection engineers who can meet your utility and witness relay tests, with Cape Town supporting secondary injection. Regions served: USA | AFRICA | UK | UAE | CHINA. USP&E’s reach covers 85+ countries guided, 35+ completed utility-scale projects and 18 live projects in 11 countries, and the company is ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 certified.
What USP&E Has Delivered for GT Commissioning Buyers

HowTo: Build the equipment and delivery path
Your 3-step plan: 1. Share your single-line diagram, equipment data and utility requirements under NDA. 2. Get coordinated protection studies and settings with EPC and O&M scope. 3. Test, commission and operate with settings and trip records owned by one team.
- List short-circuit data, CT ratios, coordination windows, and which relays must be proven before energisation is released.
- Compare remanufactured GE Frame 6B, verified used/new gas turbines, and natural gas engines/stations against protection assumptions.
- Review candidates at the central inventory hub and request records, inspection findings, controls status, impedance data, and logistics dimensions.
- Reserve relay and cable interfaces for modular FX-45 OCGT 45MW / CCGT 108MW 2×1, 50/60 Hz, with capacity slots from 2028.
- Integrate coordination curves, secondary injection plans, trip baselines, and O&M change-control into one study matrix.
- Complete permits, funding, interconnection agreements, and commissioning rehearsals before final equipment selection.

FAQ: New GT Relay Coordination Study
Why is relay coordination a commercial gate for new turbines?
USP&E treats relay coordination as a commercial gate because study results can change breaker ratings, CT ratios and relay types. Completing studies before equipment is finalised avoids late changes, nuisance trips and commissioning delays that cost far more than the study itself.
What data does a protection coordination study need?
USP&E gathers generator reactances and decrement curves, transformer impedances, cable data, relay types and the utility’s fault levels and settings at the connection point. Accurate data lets your settings work correctly with the plant islanded, grid-connected and partially loaded, with no guesswork left for site.
Does a remanufactured GE Frame 6B need its own protection study?
USP&E includes every remanufactured GE Frame 6B in the site coordination study with your new units. Its generator data and existing relay settings are reviewed so it neither trips unnecessarily nor leaves faults uncleared, and inspection records and controls status are confirmed first.
Which USP&E offices support turbine commissioning programmes?
USP&E supports US commissioning programmes from Colorado Springs and Knoxville, where protection engineers work with utilities and site teams. Johannesburg leads engineering and project controls, Cape Town adds design and commissioning, London covers finance and contracts, and Wuxi supports China-made switchgear.
Has USP&E delivered and commissioned turbine projects before?
USP&E has refurbished seven GE Frame 6B gas turbines to zero hours in-house for major US hyperscale data-centre developers. USP&E also engineered and commissioned a 16 MW HFO power station for London Mining at Marampa in Sierra Leone, two months ahead of schedule.
Is USP&E a broker for new gas turbines?
USP&E is not a broker. USP&E is a full-service EPC and O&M contractor that performs protection studies, supplies and installs turbines, sets and tests relays, commissions the plant and operates it, so one accountable team owns your protection from study to daily operation.
How fast can USP&E respond to a protection study request?
USP&E can begin as soon as you share your single-line diagram, equipment data and utility requirements. Engineers review data gaps first and request missing information from suppliers, so timing depends mostly on how quickly your data is available and how long the utility’s review process takes.
How is relay coordination proven during commissioning?
USP&E proves coordination with secondary injection testing of every relay, functional trip tests of breakers and checks of interlocks and communication schemes. Results are recorded against the approved settings file, and any deviation is resolved before the plant is energised.
Commission Protection You Can Trust
Coordinate relays early and your new turbines trip only when they should, faults clear safely and commissioning stays on schedule. Leave it late and you face nuisance trips, damaged equipment and delayed revenue. USP&E will help you get protection right the first time.
