New GT Grid-Code Compliance

Your new gas turbine is installed and ready to run, but the utility will not let it export until it proves compliance with the grid code: fault ride-through, frequency response, reactive power capability and protection settings, all witnessed and documented.

If grid-code work starts late, energisation waits on studies, test procedures and setting changes. Every week of delay is lost revenue, idle capital and a commissioning team on standby, and a failed witness test can push your commercial operation date back by months.

USP&E as Your Guide Through Grid-Code Compliance

We understand the frustration of a finished plant held back by paperwork and tests. Since 2002 USP&E has built 150+ power stations, supplied about 25 000 MW and guided projects in 85+ countries, with 35+ completed utility-scale projects and 18 live projects in 11 countries. Our 400+ engineers and project managers are ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 certified and work under FCPA and OFAC controls. USP&E is a full-service EPC and O&M contractor, not a broker.

Treat the Grid Code as a Commercial Gate

List every grid-code clause that applies to your connection: voltage and frequency ranges, fault ride-through, active power control, frequency response, reactive capability, power quality and protection coordination. Then map each clause to your equipment feature, setting and test that proves it. That map becomes your compliance plan and your commissioning schedule.

Engage the utility early. Agree study assumptions, model formats and witness test procedures before equipment is ordered, because some requirements affect the choice of generator, excitation system and controls. A clause discovered after delivery can force hardware changes that no amount of setting adjustment will fix. Ask suppliers of your gas turbine generators for validated dynamic models in the utility’s preferred format early, because model approval is often the longest single item on the compliance path.

Bridge With a Remanufactured GE Frame 6B Under Compliance Pressure

A remanufactured GE Frame 6B can provide capacity while new units complete their studies and tests, but it must meet the same grid code. Verify its records, reman scope, controls condition and preservation, and check whether its excitation and governor systems need upgrades to satisfy current requirements.

Natural gas engines/stations and used/new gas turbines face the same scrutiny. Compare them on how easily they meet ride-through and frequency response requirements, how good their dynamic models are and how much testing the utility will require before export. Witness tests need careful choreography: test scripts, metering, utility observers and a fallback plan if a step fails, so rehearse them internally before the official date.

Plan AI Gas Turbines and FX-45 Blocks Beside the Grid

Programmes that add AI gas turbines, hyperscale generators and gas turbines for compute behind the meter still interact with the grid, and utilities increasingly apply connection requirements to large behind-the-meter plants. Plan studies for the final site configuration, so each new block does not trigger a fresh round of surprises.

The planning reference for later capacity is modular FX-45 OCGT 45MW / CCGT 108MW 2×1, for 50 Hz and 60 Hz, with capacity slots from 2028. One team carrying compliance into hyperscale EPC/O&M keeps models, settings files and test records current as your plant grows.

Local Teams Near Your GT Commissioning Site

Data-centre schedules are won or lost in permitting, gas supply and interconnection, so USP&E puts its US offices first. Colorado Springs (1755 Telstar Dr, Suite 300) and Knoxville (800 S Gay St, Suite 700) give you two US bases for engineering reviews, procurement follow-up and site visits, and both teams work your new GT commissioning programme alongside you rather than from a sales desk.

Behind them, London (162-168 Regent Street) handles structuring, bonding and finance; Johannesburg (22 Kildoon Rd, Bryanston) owns engineering and project controls for new gas turbines, commissioning spares and bridge units; Cape Town (31 Brickfield Road, Woodstock) supports design and commissioning; and Wuxi, China (No. 1, Ningzhou Road, Wuxi) manages China manufacturing and supply-chain follow-up.

For a new turbine facing grid-code tests, that means US engineers can meet your utility, agree test procedures and witness the tests, while studies and settings stay with one team. Regions served: USA | AFRICA | UK | UAE | CHINA. That network has guided projects in 85+ countries, delivered 35+ completed utility-scale projects and runs 18 live projects in 11 countries under ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 certified systems.

USP&E Track Record for GT Commissioning

Commissioning on schedule depends on getting tests right first time. These projects show USP&E engineering and commissioning plants ahead of or on time.

  • USP&E has refurbished seven GE Frame 6B gas turbines to zero hours in-house for major US hyperscale data-centre developers.
  • London Mining, Marampa, Sierra Leone: USP&E engineered, supplied and commissioned a 16 MW HFO power station in five months, two months ahead of schedule and on budget. Read the case study.
  • Perenco, Guatemala: USP&E delivered a 13.1 MW HFO/diesel modular power station under full EPC in under five months, on time and on budget. Read the case study.

HowTo: Build the equipment and delivery path

Your 3-step plan: 1. Share connection agreements, grid code and single-line diagrams under NDA. 2. Receive a clause-by-clause compliance plan with studies and tests. 3. Commission, pass witness tests and hand over to accountable O&M.

  1. List applicable grid-code clauses, utility witness requirements, and which loads must stay online during contingencies.
  2. Compare remanufactured GE Frame 6B, verified used/new gas turbines, and natural gas engines/stations against study assumptions.
  3. Review candidates at the central inventory hub and request records, inspection findings, controls status, and logistics dimensions.
  4. Reserve interfaces for modular FX-45 OCGT 45MW / CCGT 108MW 2×1, 50/60 Hz, with capacity slots from 2028, including study updates.
  5. Integrate protection settings, SCADA, operator training, and O&M change-control into one compliance matrix.
  6. Complete permits, funding, interconnection agreements, and commissioning rehearsals before final equipment selection.

FAQ: New GT Grid-Code Compliance

Why does grid-code compliance delay new gas turbines?

USP&E sees grid-code compliance delay new turbines when studies, models and test procedures start too late. Utilities will not allow export until ride-through, frequency response, reactive capability and protection are proven, so compliance work must run in parallel with design and procurement from the start.

Can your remanufactured GE Frame 6B meet modern grid codes?

USP&E evaluates a remanufactured GE Frame 6B against the applicable grid code clause by clause. Many requirements can be met with settings and controls updates, while some may need excitation or governor upgrades, so the review happens before the unit is committed to the connection.

Where are USP&E offices that support US grid connections?

USP&E supports US grid connections from its Colorado Springs and Knoxville offices, which handle utility meetings, engineering reviews and site visits. London handles structuring and finance, Johannesburg owns engineering and project controls, Cape Town supports design and commissioning, and Wuxi manages China manufacturing follow-up.

Has USP&E delivered commissioning on schedule before?

USP&E has delivered many plants on schedule. USP&E has refurbished seven GE Frame 6B gas turbines to zero hours in-house for major US hyperscale data-centre developers, commissioned the 16 MW Marampa HFO station two months ahead of schedule and delivered a 13.1 MW modular station in Guatemala in under five months.

Is USP&E a broker?

USP&E is not a broker. USP&E is a full-service EPC and O&M contractor that engineers, supplies, builds, commissions and operates power plants, so the team preparing your grid-code studies is accountable for passing the witness tests and keeping your plant compliant afterwards.

How fast can USP&E respond to a grid-code review?

USP&E can begin as soon as you share the connection agreement, applicable grid code and single-line diagrams. US engineers map clauses to equipment and tests first, then plan studies and settings, and timing depends on utility responsiveness, model availability and test windows.

What studies does your grid connection usually need?

USP&E typically prepares short-circuit, load flow, dynamic stability, protection coordination and power quality studies, plus validated models of the generator, excitation and governor. The utility reviews them before agreeing witness tests, so model quality directly affects how quickly you energise and export.

How is your compliance maintained after energisation?

USP&E maintains compliance through settings management, periodic testing, model updates after equipment changes and records the utility can audit. Any change to controls, firmware or protection goes through a review, so your plant does not drift out of compliance between inspections.

Energise on Your Schedule

Start grid-code work early and your new turbine passes its tests and exports on the planned date. Leave it late and a finished plant sits idle while studies and settings catch up. USP&E will help you plan compliance from the first drawing.
