New GT Commissioning Gates for Programme Delivery
Your new gas turbine programme is approaching commissioning, and everyone wants a first-fire date to announce. But commissioning is not one day. It is a sequence of proofs, and skipping any of them pushes risk into the years of operation that follow.
If gates are rushed, defects surface after handover, warranties get argued over, operators inherit a plant they do not trust and your availability targets slip from the first month. The cost of a missed proof is always higher later.
USP&E Guides Your Commissioning Gates
We understand the pressure to declare a turbine ready, and we also know what happens when that pressure wins. Since 2002 USP&E has built 150+ power stations and supplied about 25 000 MW across 85+ countries, with 35+ completed utility-scale projects and 18 live projects in 11 countries. Our 400+ engineers and project managers run commissioning as a gated programme. USP&E is a full-service EPC and O&M contractor, not a broker.
Commissioning Is a Programme of Gates
Each gate proves something specific: mechanical completion, cold commissioning of auxiliaries, fuel system integrity, protection testing, first fire, synchronisation, load runs and performance testing. Define who signs each gate and what evidence they need. Your gas turbine generators should not pass a gate on a verbal promise.
Build the gate list into the project schedule from the start. When a gate slips, you then see exactly which later activities move, instead of discovering the impact during the final week before handover.
Define each gate with the evidence it needs: test reports, protection settings, punch-list closure and signed acceptance. When you agree those criteria before mobilisation, nobody argues about readiness on the day your turbine is meant to run.
Apply the Same Gates to Frame 6B Bridges
A remanufactured GE Frame 6B used as a bridge needs the same gated discipline as a new unit: inspection evidence, fuel and lube system checks, protection testing and load runs. Verify its records and controls status before it enters the programme, so it supports the schedule instead of adding risk.
Natural gas engines/stations and used/new gas turbines used as interim power should follow the same gate templates. A consistent method makes it easier for your operators to trust every machine on site.
Bridge units often arrive under schedule pressure, which is exactly when gates are skipped. Holding a Frame 6B to the same evidence standard protects your site from trips and gives your operators confidence to rely on it.
Treat FX-45 Slots as Later-Phase Gates
If your programme will grow into compute, AI gas turbines, hyperscale generators and gas turbines for compute will join through their own gates. Reserve interfaces and plan commissioning resources for those later phases now.
The planning reference for later blocks is modular FX-45 OCGT 45MW / CCGT 108MW 2×1, for 50 Hz and 60 Hz, with capacity slots from 2028. USP&E carries the gate method into hyperscale EPC/O&M so every block enters service with the same evidence.
Reserve commissioning resources for later FX-45 phases in your programme now. Engineers who know your site, your gate history and your protection settings make every later block faster and safer to bring online.
Where USP&E Supports Your GT Commissioning Project
If your new GT commissioning programme is in the United States, your first conversations run through USP&E’s US offices in Colorado Springs (1755 Telstar Dr, Suite 300) and Knoxville (800 S Gay St, Suite 700). They keep you close to developers, utilities, gas suppliers and US equipment sources, and they can walk your site before anything ships.
Johannesburg (22 Kildoon Rd, Bryanston) runs engineering, protection studies and project controls for new gas turbines, commissioning spares and bridge units, and Cape Town (31 Brickfield Road, Woodstock) adds design and commissioning support. London (162-168 Regent Street) structures the contract, insurance and financing file your lenders will read, while Wuxi, China (No. 1, Ningzhou Road, Wuxi) follows up China supply chain and manufacturing.
For a commissioning programme, that means US engineers who can witness gates on site and a Johannesburg project-controls team that keeps every gate’s evidence in one file. Regions served: USA | AFRICA | UK | UAE | CHINA. USP&E has guided projects in 85+ countries, with 35+ completed utility-scale projects and 18 live projects in 11 countries, and is ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 certified.
What USP&E Has Delivered for GT Commissioning Buyers
You want proof that USP&E can bring power plants into service on schedule. These projects show that record.
- USP&E has refurbished seven GE Frame 6B gas turbines to zero hours in-house for major US hyperscale data-centre developers.
- NEOM, Saudi Arabia: USP&E supplied three zero-hour Siemens SGT-400 gas turbines as the single technical and commercial interface, and the client reported savings of over $10 million. Read the case study.
- London Mining, Marampa, Sierra Leone: USP&E engineered, supplied and commissioned a 16 MW HFO power station in five months, two months ahead of schedule and on budget. Read the case study.
HowTo: Build the equipment and delivery path
Your 3-step plan: 1. Share your programme schedule, scope and equipment list under NDA. 2. Get a gated commissioning plan with EPC and O&M scope. 3. Pass each gate with evidence and hand over to accountable O&M.
- List every commissioning gate, its owner and the evidence required to pass it.
- Apply the same gates to new units, a remanufactured GE Frame 6B, verified used/new gas turbines and natural gas engines/stations.
- Review bridge equipment at the central inventory hub and request records, inspection findings and logistics dimensions.
- Reserve interfaces and commissioning resources for modular FX-45 OCGT 45MW / CCGT 108MW 2×1, 50/60 Hz, with capacity slots from 2028.
- Run protection, fuel, first-fire, synchronisation and load tests in order, recording evidence at each step.
- Hand over with as-builts, test results, spares and trained operators before commercial operation.

FAQ: New GT Commissioning Gates
Why treat commissioning as a series of gates?
USP&E treats commissioning as gates because each step proves a different system works before the next step adds risk. Mechanical completion, auxiliaries, fuel, protection, first fire, synchronisation and load runs each need evidence, so defects are found while contractors are still on site.
Do remanufactured GE Frame 6B units need the same gates?
USP&E applies the same gates to a remanufactured GE Frame 6B as to a new turbine. Inspection evidence, fuel and lube checks, protection tests and load runs confirm the bridge machine is ready, so it supports your schedule rather than becoming a hidden source of risk.
Where does USP&E have offices that support gas turbine commissioning?
USP&E supports US commissioning work from Colorado Springs and Knoxville, close enough to witness each gate on your site. Johannesburg runs engineering and the project-controls file that holds gate evidence, Cape Town adds commissioning depth, London handles finance, and Wuxi follows up electrical and balance-of-plant equipment made in China.
Has USP&E delivered and commissioned power projects before?
USP&E has refurbished seven GE Frame 6B gas turbines to zero hours in-house for major US hyperscale data-centre developers. USP&E also commissioned a 16 MW HFO station for London Mining in Sierra Leone two months ahead of schedule and on budget.
Is USP&E a broker?
USP&E is not a broker. USP&E is a full-service EPC and O&M contractor, so the team that plans your gates also performs the tests, fixes the defects and then operates the plant, keeping accountability for commissioning quality long after handover and into operation.
How fast can USP&E respond to a commissioning request?
USP&E starts as soon as you share the programme schedule, scope and equipment list. Engineers build the gate plan first while the wider team confirms resources, so timing depends on site readiness, equipment delivery and how complete your existing documentation is.
How do AI gas turbines affect commissioning?
USP&E finds that AI gas turbines add tighter load-acceptance and availability expectations to commissioning. Load-step tests, protection coordination and black-start proofs carry more weight because compute halls react badly to frequency swings, so those gates need extra evidence before your handover.
What belongs in a commissioning evidence pack?
USP&E includes test procedures, signed results, protection settings, fuel and lube system records, punch lists, as-built drawings, spares lists and operator training records in every evidence pack. That file proves each gate was passed and gives your O&M team a reliable baseline.
Commission With Evidence, Operate With Confidence
Pass every gate with evidence and your turbines enter service ready for years of reliable running. Skip gates and you buy defects, disputes and early outages. USP&E will help you commission the right way.
