New GT Site Storage Preservation Scope
Your new gas turbine has arrived, but the foundation is late, the permit is still pending or the grid connection has slipped. The unit may now sit on site for weeks or months. Without proper preservation, moisture, dust and neglect can start corroding bearings, seals and electrical parts before the turbine has run a single hour.
Damage found at installation means delay, repair costs and arguments about warranty. If your storage records are thin, you may carry that risk alone, because the supplier can say the unit was not preserved as instructed.
USP&E Helps You Preserve a New GT Waiting on Site
We know storage is rarely in anyone’s plan until the schedule slips and the unit is already on the ground. With 150+ power projects in 45+ countries and 25,000 MW contracted since 2002, USP&E puts 400+ engineers and project managers behind you; they set up storage, preservation routines and inspection records for new turbines that must wait before installation. You get ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 certified quality and safety systems, with FCPA and OFAC compliance on every contract. USP&E is a full-service EPC and O&M contractor, not a broker.
Preservation is not complicated, but it is relentless. The same checks, on the same schedule, recorded the same way, until the day the unit moves to its foundation.
Start With the Supplier’s Storage Instructions
Read the supplier’s storage and preservation instructions before the unit ships, not after it arrives. They set the conditions, checks and intervals your warranty may depend on, and they differ between turbine, generator and auxiliary skids.
Check what preservation was applied at the factory: desiccant, vapour corrosion inhibitors, sealed covers and any oil or nitrogen fills. Record the state of each on arrival, with photos you can show the supplier later.
Ask early who is responsible for preservation on site. If the supplier, the EPC contractor and your own team each assume someone else is doing it, nobody will.
Choose Storage and Keep It Dry and Secure
Choose a dry, secure storage area with a firm, level base, good drainage and crane access for the eventual move. Indoor storage is best; if the unit must stay outside, protect it from standing water, dust and direct sun on covers.
Keep your desiccant, covers, seals and humidity indicators on a written schedule. Replace desiccant when indicators change colour, repair torn covers at once, and keep openings sealed.
Protect electrical parts. Generator heaters, where fitted, may need a temporary power supply to keep windings dry, and control panels need protection from condensation and dust. Check heater supplies at every inspection, because a tripped temporary supply can go unnoticed for weeks.
Turn, Inspect and Log Until Installation
Turn or inspect your rotating parts at the intervals the instructions require, so bearings and seals do not take a set. Record each turn, check and finding with dates and photos.
Before the unit leaves storage, run a pre-installation check against the arrival record. Any change should be investigated and agreed with the supplier before installation starts. If the unit has been stored longer than the instructions allow, ask the supplier what extra checks they require before installation.
Good storage records protect every purchase. Many gas turbine generators bought for hyperscale EPC/O&M programmes, AI gas turbines, hyperscale generators and gas turbines for compute often wait for campus readiness, and slots for the New USP&E FX-45 45MW Modular Gas Turbine for the Hyperscale Data Center sector in the USA will be planned with the same discipline. A remanufactured GE Frame 6B, verified used/new gas turbines or natural gas engines/stations can bridge the gap while your new unit waits.

FAQ: New GT Site Storage Preservation Scope
Why does a new gas turbine need preservation on site?
USP&E sees moisture, dust and neglect damage bearings, seals and electrical parts on new units that wait for foundations, permits or grid connections. Your preservation routine keeps the turbine in factory condition and protects your warranty position if questions arise later.
What do supplier storage instructions usually cover?
USP&E finds they set storage conditions, desiccant and cover checks, rotor turning intervals, heater use and inspection records. Your warranty may depend on following them. Read them before shipment so your storage area, materials and people are ready when the unit arrives.
Can a new turbine be stored outdoors?
USP&E prefers indoor storage, but outdoor storage can work with a firm base, good drainage, intact covers and protection from standing water and dust. Your preservation checks become even more important outside, because covers tear and seals degrade faster in sun and wind.
What should be checked before installation?
USP&E runs a pre-installation check against the arrival record: covers, desiccant, seals, rotor condition, electrical parts and any damage. You investigate every change with the supplier before installation starts, so problems are solved on your site before they become costly warranty disputes.
Where are USP&E’s offices that support new GT projects?
USP&E leads new gas turbine commissioning from Colorado Springs and Knoxville, close to US projects and suppliers. London structures contracts and finance, Johannesburg and Cape Town add EPC and O&M depth, and Wuxi supports China manufacturing. Every office shares your project file.
Has USP&E delivered gas turbine projects before?
USP&E has refurbished seven GE Frame 6B gas turbines to zero hours in-house for major US hyperscale data-centre developers. Public case studies also cover NEOM, where USP&E supplied zero-hour gas turbines as the single technical and commercial interface. You can read each case study yourself.
Is USP&E a broker for new gas turbines?
USP&E is not a broker. USP&E designs, supplies, installs and operates power plants with its own engineers, so the team that preserves your turbine on site also installs and commissions it and stays accountable to you after first fire and through early operation.
How fast can USP&E respond on a storage plan?
USP&E can start reviewing your supplier instructions, delivery dates and site plans as soon as you share them under NDA. Engineers flag storage risks and missing responsibilities first, then issue the plan, with timing set by delivery dates and site access.
Keep Your New Turbine in Factory Condition
Get preservation right and your turbine installs in the condition it left the factory. Get it wrong and the first sign is corrosion, a repair bill and a warranty dispute. USP&E will help you store, inspect and install with confidence.
