New GT Inlet Filtration Scope

Your new gas turbine breathes enormous volumes of air, and everything in that air either stops at the filters or ends up in the compressor. Dust erodes blades, salt drives corrosion and fouling, and humid air can carry it all straight through a filter that was chosen for a different site.

If the inlet filtration is wrong, you risk lost output, more frequent washes, blade damage and a forced outage within the first seasons of running. The cost lands on your output and your maintenance budget long after the purchase decision looked complete.

USP&E Helps You Scope Inlet Filtration for Your Site

We understand that inlet filtration often looks like a small line item next to the turbine itself. USP&E has delivered 150+ power projects in 45+ countries, with 25,000 MW contracted since 2002, and our 400+ engineers and project managers specify, build and operate new turbine plants in deserts, coasts and humid regions, so we match filtration to what each site really breathes. We work under ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 certified systems with FCPA and OFAC controls. USP&E is a full-service EPC and O&M contractor, not a broker.

Define the Air Your Turbine Will Breathe

Define the dust, salt and humidity envelope for every site where your new gas turbine generators will run. Look at local weather data, nearby roads, quarries, farms, coastline and industrial sources. A site near the coast needs salt protection, a desert site needs dust loading capacity, and a humid site needs to keep wet salt and fine particles from passing through.

Include seasonal events in your data. Dust storms, fog seasons and harvest periods can change your air for weeks. Your filtration should be designed for those weeks, not for the average day.

Choose Filter Classes, Housings and Alarms

Select your filter stages to match the OEM air quality limits: pre-filters for coarse dust, high-efficiency final filters for fine particles, and coalescers or moisture separators where humidity and salt are present. Some sites need self-cleaning pulse filters to handle heavy dust without frequent change-outs.

Specify differential pressure instruments for each stage, with alarms your control room can see. A rising differential tells you a stage is loading, and a sudden drop can mean a torn element or a bypass, which is worse.

Check your housing for leaks and bypass paths. The best filter you can buy does nothing if air goes round it through a poor seal or an open door.

Plan your compressor washing alongside filtration. Even good filters let some fine material through, and online and offline washes recover output that fouling takes away. Agree wash intervals and water quality with the turbine supplier, and use the filter differential and output trends together to decide when a wash will pay back.

Prove Access, Hold Spares and Plan Growth

Prove change-out access and spare media before first fire. Your crews should be able to replace elements safely and quickly, and you should hold at least a full set of spares on site, because filters are often hard to source in a hurry.

If filtration rework delays the start, hold cover with a remanufactured GE Frame 6B or verified used/new gas turbines, and use natural gas engines/stations for smaller loads.

Leave pad and duct space for later blocks such as the new FX-45. AI gas turbines, hyperscale generators and gas turbines for compute, including the New USP&E FX-45 45MW Modular Gas Turbine for the Hyperscale Data Center sector in the USA, can then share one filtration standard under one hyperscale EPC/O&M team.

HowTo: Scope New GT Inlet Filtration

Your 3-step plan: 1. Share site air data, turbine model and layout under NDA. 2. Receive filter stages, alarm settings and a spares plan. 3. Install, prove and run the inlet under accountable O&M.

  1. Define ambient dust, salt and humidity envelopes for every new gas turbine site.
  2. Select filter classes, housings and differential alarms that match OEM limits.
  3. Prove change-out access and spare media before first fire.
  4. Hold cover with a remanufactured GE Frame 6B or used/new gas turbines if filtration rework delays start.
  5. Leave pad and duct space for later blocks such as the new FX-45.
  6. Hand filter differentials and change rules into O&M from day one.

FAQ: New GT Inlet Filtration Scope

Why does inlet filtration matter so much on a new gas turbine?

USP&E sees inlet air decide compressor health. Dust erodes blades, salt causes corrosion and fouling, and humid air carries both through the wrong filter. Poor filtration means lost output, more washes and blade damage, often within the first few seasons of running.

What site data do you need to choose filters?

USP&E uses local weather data and nearby sources such as roads, quarries, farms, coastline and industry. Seasonal events like dust storms and fog seasons matter most. Your filters should be designed for the worst weeks of the year, not the average day.

Which filter stages does a typical site need?

USP&E usually combines pre-filters for coarse dust, high-efficiency final filters for fine particles, and coalescers or moisture separators where salt and humidity are present. Heavy dust sites may need self-cleaning pulse filters. The final choice must meet the turbine’s air quality limits.

What do filter differential pressure alarms tell you?

USP&E uses differential pressure on each stage as an early warning. A steady rise means a stage is loading and needs planning. A sudden drop can mean a torn element or bypass, which lets unfiltered air into your compressor and needs action straight away.

Where are USP&E’s offices for new turbine projects?

USP&E leads new turbine work from Colorado Springs and Knoxville, close to US sites and filter suppliers. London structures contracts and finance, Johannesburg and Cape Town add field O&M depth, and Wuxi supports China supply chain and manufacturing. Every office works from the same project file.

Has USP&E delivered new turbine plants before?

USP&E has refurbished seven GE Frame 6B gas turbines to zero hours in-house for major US hyperscale data-centre developers. Public case studies also include NEOM and other projects in harsh air with accountable EPC and O&M. You can read each case study and judge the evidence yourself.

Is USP&E a broker for new gas turbines?

USP&E is not a broker. USP&E is a full-service EPC and O&M contractor that engineers, supplies, builds, commissions and operates power plants with its own engineers and project managers, so the team that scopes your filtration also runs the turbine. You deal with one accountable team from first review to O&M.

How fast can USP&E respond to an inlet filtration request?

USP&E can start reviewing your site air data, turbine model and layout as soon as you share them under NDA. Engineers flag dust, salt and humidity risks first, then issue the filter stages and spares plan, with timing set by data quality.

Keep Your Compressor Breathing Clean Air

Get inlet filtration right and your new turbine holds output and blade condition season after season. Get it wrong and dust, salt or wet air quietly eat your output and your maintenance budget. USP&E will help you scope, install and run the inlet with confidence.
