Dallas-based USP&E Global’s tag line is "Powering Business. Empowering People", and it couldn’t be more appropriate. USP&E is currently working with two partner firms to develop and sell a Renewable Power Station (RPS) concept that utilizes renewable feed stocks to produce ethanol, then converting this ethanol to electric power via a revolutionary gasification process. This process not only creates an entirely green and environmentally friendly electric power with zero emissions, but it utilizes all by-products such as massive amounts of valuable animal feed and much needed quality drinking water. But the most attractive benefit of this technology is that it creates literally thousands of year-round agricultural jobs.
With power station projects in various stages of feasibility to installation to full production around the world, USP&E is currently focused on Bangladesh, Iraq, Pakistan, Sierra Leone, Guatemala and the Philippines. Many of these projects can be quite challenging because they often require the integration several divergent processes such as the utilization of different feed stocks including sugar cane and sweet sorghum juices, cassava, cane syrups, and molasses, all of which must to be processed and combined throughout the year long operation. In the end, USP&E and its partners process feedstocks through a diffuser system for sugar cane and sweet sorghum, auxiliary processing for the starch content of the cassava chips, and auxiliary input and preprocessing for molasses and syrups.
As a result, a state of the art continuous fermentation and distillation plant to produce hydrous ethanol was designed. Some specific auxiliary equipment and processes were integrated as part of the plant solutions, including water treatment, vinasses processing using the heat exhaust from the power generating turbines and some primary turbines for co-generation.
The model USP&E Global Sorghum Power Plant has the following properties:
- Ethanol-600,000 liters/day equivalent to 158,504 gallons/day approximately 56 MMGY
- Electric Power Generation- 114.8 MW
- Organic Fertilizer from the vinasses for banana growers and other farmers
- Secondary bio-diesel plant from coconut oil using steam and power from main plant
Several clients from around the world have approved the proposed contract for the total supply of the plant, including engineering, consulting, supervision of the erection and construction, training of the client’s personnel and final commissioning and delivery. Several of these clients are so impressed with the solutions and expertise of USP&E and its partners that they are entering into 20 – 25 year power purchase agreements USP&E in order to have them supervise the operation and maintenance of the plant.
As off Q1 2011, several renewable projects in emerging markets are just about shovel ready. Several government and agency permits have been granted or are in process and the basic engineering and financing back office work for the turbine generation section have been concluded. The turbines which were selected should be tested and shipped in 18-20 months. With a profitable outcome, projections indicate that the integrated plant will yield an IRR of 50% with a positive cash flow in the first year of operation.
